What Is a Deckover Trailer?
On a standard utility trailer the deck sits between the wheels, narrowed by the fenders. A deckover sits above the wheels, so the deck runs the full width of the trailer — typically 8' or 8.5' wide — giving you significantly more usable load area. The trade-off is a higher deck and a steeper load angle.
When to Choose a Deckover
Deckovers are ideal for wide or palletized loads: full pallets side-by-side, wide machinery, sheet goods, and anything that won't fit between standard fenders. The full-width deck also makes side loading easier and gives more room for tie-downs along the edges.
Load Angle Considerations
Because the deck sits higher, the load angle is steeper than a between-the-fenders trailer. For wheeled loads, choose a deckover with a beavertail rear and long ramps, or consider a tilt or lowboy if your equipment has low ground clearance. For palletized and craned loads, the higher deck doesn't matter.
Capacity and Configuration
- GVWR — deckovers commonly run 10,000–20,000 lb; match to your load plus margin.
- Single vs. tandem vs. triple axle — more axles for heavier loads and smoother towing.
- Deck material — steel for strength, aluminum for weight savings, treated wood for replaceability.
- Stake pockets and rub rails — for tie-downs along the full deck edge.
