Trailer Buying Guide
Buying a trailer starts with one question: what are you hauling, and how much does it weigh? The right trailer matches your load to a frame, axle setup and hitch rated to carry it safely down the road. This guide walks through the decisions that matter most.
Size the trailer to your heaviest realistic load, not your average one.
Measure your longest load and add a foot for tie-downs and ramps.
Tandem axles for 5,000 lb+ or highway hauling; single for light loads.
Your tow vehicle's rating must exceed the loaded trailer weight.
GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) is the maximum total weight a trailer is engineered to carry, including the trailer itself. Payload capacity is what's left for your cargo after you subtract the trailer's empty (dry) weight. A trailer with a 7,000 lb GVWR and a 1,500 lb empty weight gives you roughly 5,500 lb of usable payload. Always size the trailer to your heaviest realistic load — not your average one — and leave a safety margin. Overloading is the most common cause of axle, tire and bearing failures.
Trailer size is measured in deck length and width, and the right dimensions depend on what you're loading. A 6x12 utility trailer handles yard work and small equipment; a 7x14 or 7x16 dump trailer is the sweet spot for landscaping and construction debris; an 8.5x20 enclosed cargo trailer fits most moving and contractor needs. For vehicles, measure your longest possible load and add at least a foot of margin for tie-downs and ramps.
Single axle trailers are lighter, easier to maneuver by hand and cost less — ideal for lighter loads under roughly 3,000 lb. Tandem axle (dual-axle) trailers distribute weight across four tires instead of two, raising payload capacity, improving stability and adding a margin of safety if a tire fails. For anything approaching 5,000 lb or more, or for highway hauling, a tandem axle is almost always the better choice.
The terms get used loosely, but there's a real distinction. Utility trailers are typically lighter-duty open trailers with lower sides, suited to general hauling. Equipment trailers are built heavier, with higher GVWR ratings, stronger frames and often a deckover or tilt design to load machinery like skid steers, mini-excavators and tractors. If you're loading driven equipment, you want an equipment trailer.
Dump trailers use a hydraulic ram to raise the bed and unload loose material — gravel, dirt, debris, mulch — saving hours of manual shoveling. A 7x14 single-axle dump handles residential and landscaping work; a 14,000 lb GVWR tandem dump is the workhorse for construction sites. Pay attention to the hydraulic system, the scissor vs. telescopic ram design and the wall gauge — thicker steel walls survive repeated heavy loads.
Enclosed cargo trailers protect your load from weather and theft, making them the go-to for contractors, racers and mobile businesses. An 8.5x20 enclosed is a common size, but height matters too — taller interiors fit standing work and taller cargo. Compare frame construction (tube vs. hat-shaped cross members), wall insulation and door configuration when choosing.
Car hauler trailers are open flatbeds with ramps and often a tilt or beavertail deck for low loading angles — ideal for vehicles. Gooseneck trailers couple in the bed of a pickup, which transfers weight over the tow vehicle's rear axle for far greater stability and capacity than a bumper pull. Goosenecks are the standard for heavy equipment and hotshot hauling once you exceed what a bumper-pull can safely handle.
Deckover trailers place the flatbed deck directly over the fenders and axles, giving you a full 102" wide deck — the maximum legal width without a permit. This makes them ideal for hauling wide loads like skid steers, tractors, palletized material, and large equipment that won't fit on a standard between-the-fenders trailer. Available in bumper pull and gooseneck configurations with GVWR ratings from 10,000 to 25,000 lbs, deckovers are the workhorse for construction, agriculture, and hotshot operators who need maximum deck space and payload capacity.
Tilt trailers use a pivot mechanism to tilt the entire deck to ground level, letting you drive or winch wheeled equipment straight on with no separate ramps to store or lift. They're ideal for low-clearance machines like scissor lifts, skid steers, zero-turn mowers, and anything that struggles with a steep load angle. Available in gravity-tilt and full-hydraulic configurations with GVWR ratings from 7,000 to 22,000 lbs, tilt trailers are the go-to for equipment rental yards, contractors, and anyone who needs fast, ramp-free loading.
Livestock trailers are purpose-built for safely transporting cattle, horses and other animals. They feature enclosed or partial-top bodies with ventilation slats, rubber-matted or cleated floors for sure footing, and swing or butterfly gates for flexible loading and sorting. A 14,000 lb GVWR gooseneck stock trailer handles most cattle operations, while bumper-pull aluminum models like the EBY Maverick are light enough for everyday ranch use. Look for escape doors, interior lighting and center partitions when comparing livestock trailers — they make solo loading and animal handling far safer.
Kitchen trailers are fully equipped mobile food service units built for catering, street food vending and concession operations. They feature stainless steel countertops, multiple sinks, fresh and waste water systems, integrated electrical with power sockets, and LED lighting — all customizable to your menu and local voltage standard (110V or 220V). Available in single and tandem axle configurations, with optional cooking equipment including gas stoves, deep fryers, ovens, grills and refrigeration.
You don't have to pick up every trailer yourself. We offer nationwide delivery options coordinated with our team, so your trailer can arrive ready to work wherever you are.
