Used Trailers For Sale

Used Trailers For Sale

A used trailer can be a smart buy — you get a work-ready trailer at a lower price than new, and someone else already took the depreciation hit. At Prime Trail Trailers we inspect every used trailer before it hits our lot: frame integrity, axle condition, floor soundness, wiring, brakes, and tires. If it does not pass, we do not sell it.

Our used trailer inventory changes frequently, so the selection you see today may be gone tomorrow. We price used trailers honestly based on condition and age — not inflated retail. Whether you want a used dump trailer for a side job or a used enclosed trailer for a startup business, we have inspected pre-owned trailers that are ready to work.

How to Buy a Used Trailer Safely

Expert guidance to help you make the right choice.

A used trailer can save you 20–40% over new, but only if you buy one that is actually road-ready. The four things to inspect on any used trailer are the frame, the axles, the floor, and the wiring. Look for frame cracks at weld points (especially the tongue and crossmember joints), axle wear (bent spindles, leaking hubs), floor rot (probe wood floors with a screwdriver for soft spots), and wiring condition (corroded connections, non-functional lights). If any of these fail, walk away or negotiate the repair cost.

Tires and brakes are the most common hidden costs on a used trailer. Trailer tires age out before they wear out — a 6-year-old tire with good tread is still unsafe and should be replaced. Check the tire DOT date code (the last 4 digits: week and year of manufacture). If the tires are over 6 years old, budget for replacements. Electric brakes should be tested with a brake controller — if the trailer has brakes but they do not activate, the magnets or wiring may need repair.

Always get a title or MSO and a bill of sale. If the seller cannot provide a title for a titled trailer, do not buy it — you may not be able to register it. Verify the VIN on the trailer matches the title. For used trailers under the titling threshold in your state, a bill of sale is sufficient. A reputable dealer will handle the paperwork correctly; a private seller may not. We inspect and repair every used trailer before listing — so buying from us eliminates the risk.

Key Considerations

  • Inspect frame welds, axles, floor, and wiring — the four critical systems
  • Trailer tires age out at 6 years — check the DOT date code before buying
  • Test electric brakes with a controller — non-functional brakes mean magnet or wiring repair
  • Always get a title or MSO plus bill of sale — verify the VIN matches
  • Budget for tires, brakes, and wiring repairs when negotiating price
  • Buying from a dealer eliminates inspection risk — we repair before listing
