Equipment Trailers For Sale

Equipment Trailers For Sale

Equipment trailers are built to move heavy machinery — skid steers, mini excavators, tractors, and compact loaders. At Prime Trail Trailers we stock equipment trailers from 14 to 30 feet with dovetail decks, heavy-duty tandem and triple axles, and capacities from 7,000 to 20,000+ pounds.

An equipment trailer is a serious investment, and we take it seriously. Our equipment trailers feature full-length structural steel tube or I-beam frames, 5-inch or 6-inch channel crossmembers, heavy-duty spring axles with electric brakes, and dovetail decks with slide-out ramps that load machinery without bottoming out. Whether you are a contractor moving a skid steer between sites or a farmer hauling a tractor, our equipment trailers are rated for the weight.

How to Choose an Equipment Trailer

Expert guidance to help you make the right choice.

Equipment trailers are rated by GVWR and deck length, and the most critical spec is the payload capacity — GVWR minus the trailer's empty weight. A 20-foot equipment trailer with a 14,000 lb GVWR might weigh 3,500 lbs empty, leaving 10,500 lbs of payload. Check your machinery's operating weight (not just shipping weight) and make sure the payload exceeds it with margin. Loading a trailer to its exact GVWR is legal but leaves no room for error.

The dovetail and ramp quality separate a good equipment trailer from a dangerous one. The dovetail should be 3–5 feet long to keep the loading angle low enough for machinery. Ramps should be heavy steel channel or tube, at least 4 feet long, and rated for the trailer's GVWR — not the light ramps found on utility trailers. If ramps bend under your machinery, they are too light. Look for ramps that store under the deck or slide out on rollers.

Frame construction matters more on equipment trailers than any other type. Look for structural steel tube or I-beam main frames with channel crossmembers spaced no more than 16 inches apart. Spring axles with electric brakes on every axle are standard. A breakaway kit is required — it applies the brakes if the trailer disconnects from the truck. For loads over 14,000 lbs, a gooseneck equipment trailer tows more stable and handles the weight better than bumper pull.

Key Considerations

  • Payload = GVWR minus empty weight — always check operating weight of machinery
  • Dovetail should be 3–5 ft; ramps must be heavy steel rated for the GVWR
  • Structural steel tube or I-beam frames with channel crossmembers under 16 in spacing
  • Electric brakes on all axles with a breakaway kit are required for safety
  • Bumper pull for loads under 14,000 lbs; gooseneck for heavier loads
  • Match the trailer's GVWR to your truck's tow rating — do not exceed it

Why Buy From Prime Trail Trailers?

We sell equipment trailers rated for the weight you actually carry — not optimistic stickers. Our equipment trailers use structural steel frames, heavy spring axles, and ramps thick enough to drive a skid steer up without bending.
