What Makes a Livestock Trailer

Livestock trailers are enclosed with screened vents for airflow, rubber or polymer-lined interior walls to protect animals from injury, non-slip flooring (often rubber-matted over treated wood or steel), and interior dividers or compartments to keep animals separated and stable. Most are gooseneck for stability with live, shifting loads.

Horse vs. Stock Trailer

Horse trailers are built for one or two horses with individual stalls, padded dividers and often a dressing room. Stock trailers are open inside for cattle, hogs and sheep, with removable dividers and a more rugged, wash-out interior. Some stock trailers haul horses too; dedicated horse trailers rarely haul cattle.

Sizing for Your Animals

Allow enough length and width per animal for it to stand comfortably and brace in turns. A two-horse trailer needs about 7' of interior height for large horses; cattle trailers are sized by head count. Overcrowding causes injury — size up rather than pack animals tight.
